• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Do you have a hobby that requires certain skills or study?

Yes, you are. ;)

My take is...think for yourself and don't worry about what anyone else thinks/does when it comes to gear-buying.
I pretty much do.. and tbh.. I don’t need any more gear.. I’ve kinda got to the point that enough is enough.. and as the guy from ‘5 watt world’ rightly pointed out “you know when you’ve got enough, when you’ve got too much”

Photography. Been playing with it for 35 years plus.
Plus playing guitar which may go without saying on this forum.

Lately been experimenting with contrasty lighting etc. Art.

Lutherie , after 40 years II'm still learning ..
Just wondering if you experience the same ‘guitar tool’s mysteries’, as I do.. especially truss rod adjustment tools going missing? I swear they go back in the box.. but yet the next time they’re not there!?

I blame Kayne West.

Bonjour.

I keep all my guitar tools in one bag, which is essential at gigs , I've managed to "save the day " a few times. I keep at least 3 different truss wrenches as unfortunately there isn't a standard .

I have mine in an old lunchbox (from Kalamazoo) so it makes no sense things go missing. 🤷

I have been smoking cigars for about the past 17 years; some people consider this a hobby but I'm not sure about those opinions.

Smoking cigars doesn't require any real skills but knowing how to properly use a cutter helps. :D
Researching aka studying what is out there and available on the market, learning about what types of tobaccos are used, learning about tobacco cultivation, curing and aging and also what different blends are all about is actually a bit more complex than I would have ever thought about.

I do know that smoking a good quality premium cigar can be relaxing and very enjoyable. (y)

From Kalamazoo?
Can’t post a picture here..unfortunately ..
but it’s an old tin lunchbox from a guy who worked at “American Sign corporation - Kalamazoo Mich.” as there’s a large company sticker on the front and he was obviously bored at one point coz there’s hundreds of tiny paint spots all over it and more smaller company stickers.

Bought on eBay for under $10 in the golden era of eBay (at the beginning) searching for Kalamazoo items.

Yeah, I'm not THAT old. We had lots of fun in Kalamazoo! Detroit iron is hard to beat.

I have family in Emberton, your way. Enjoyed Carnaby Street and the city sites in 66, and the Marquee Club in 72. London is where my interest in Napoleonic history began.

Emberton is in Northampton which is great area..about an hour from London.. it’s an old industrial town but with lots of history..
Carneby in 66 was the epicentre of teenage culture.. I’d have loved to have been there in the 60s.. the first time I went I was 12/13 dressed up like a mod in a Parker down to my ankles..during the new wave of mod.. The Jam, Quadrophina movie etc.. and I remember the street having an orange and white pavement .. which I believe was original from the 70s.. soon after it was paved over.. and teaming with both Mods and Skinheads..
bought my first 45rpm there too.. Wade in the Water by Ramsey Lewis.

I did manage to play at the Marquee when it moved to Tottenham Court Road.. which I’m proud of .. as the history of the club is legendary.. Can you remember who you saw there at the time?

I’m hoping you also visited Denmark St.. which is one street over.. where everyone bought their guitars.. back then..(and is still there but under threat of development) and where I bought my first guitar.. (purple tele)

Not sure why your napoleonic admiration started in London..? As our naval battles and history far surpasses that of the French.. lol.. and I’m sure you would noticed Nelson’s column.. !?

London has changed massively.. its not like it was.. a vast majority of the classic venues/clubs have closed down.. but again I’m lucky enough to have played at most of them.. 👍

That said.. would I trade it to be in Detroit during the 60s.. hands down .. yes.. ! The explosion of music at that time from soul, blues, rock, punk.. would’ve been amazing to experience..

“Kick out the jams..”

London was the hip city in the 60's. Very impressive for a mid teen. There was a store called Tradition that sold military miniatures and had a diorama of Waterloo that got my interest going.

An aside: Blucher won for it Wellington.

I saw Wild Turkey. Glen Cornick's band after Tull. One bloke in the front row read a book the whole time. What bands did you play in?

We had a very full music scene in Detroit, but it was pretty gritty city, riots, longhair bashing, jail!

I had to google him and it would seem you are correct.. without his intervention Wellington would’ve been defeated.

lol !
I played in loads of bands tbh..and different styles..

I can imagine the conservatives.. being very aggressive towards the change in youth culture.. but I guess that happened everywhere.. and still happens today..
