• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Any ER Custom users? I have a set on order for my ‘81 Tokai ES100.

From the website, these seemed to fit the bill. The guitar is pretty bright and snappy and I’ve been shopping for a pickup that would fatten up the tone a bit and balance out some of the natural highs. Currently has the stock Gotoh pickups with Throbak UOA5. They sound nice, but a little low end lite and thin.

Indeed he does! These will be my 3rd set. Owned a set of Pre-Ts...sold along with the guitar they were in and still own a set of PG-102s. There some extra special sauce with Jon’s pickups!

Finally got the ER Customs installed in my Tokai semi-hollow. These really fit the bill. Smooth top end and a big, but not boomy low end. Nice, full midrange, but not honky. Sweet when you want it, but nice punch and grunt through a overdriven amp. They clean up beautifully as well, with VIPots. SO GLAD, these sound so good. I really didn’t want to have to do another pickup install on this guitar.

Glad these worked out for you. I had a guitar that was too thin sounding. After some research, I tried an ER Custom in the bridge position. Indeed, it helped to fill in the midrange and make it a warmer sounding guitar.

Throbaks are fine pickups, replaced the Lollars in these two instruments, the CL got the ERs and the I-35 got JW-102B Custom MXV, to try a different flavor.

Johann Gustavsson also uses them in his instruments, lucky to have three of his masterpieces.

I’m considering the throwback JW-102b’s, the Er Customs or Sle 101 plus for an Es 335. What is your opinion on the JW-102b’s in your I-35 and the differences between the JW’s and ER’s. Thanks

Sorry, haven't stopped by for a while.

The ER bridge has a bit more drive with a bumped midrange focus and the neck pick up seems clearer (less warm) than the JW102b versions. Have the SLE 100 MXVs in a couple of Gustavssons, which are slightly lower output, more 1975-58 vintage sounding than the ERs, which remind me of 1959 double whites in a 345 I have and 355 I had from that year.

Believe that Throbak makes a version that replicates the early 1960s PAF/Pat Stickers found in the 1963-1964 period, as well.
