• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Missing letters in the model number?

Hi all,
I'm about to buy my first Les Paul so I need some help to go through this immense world of guitars and models!
The LP I'm close to buy is supposed to be a 2005 LP Standard, but I'm not convinced by the model number, which is: LP5TCANH1.
There should be an "S" before the number 5, am I right?
Can you guys help me figure out if it is really a Standard? I'm sure it is not a custom nor a studio.
And also, which color should be CAN-TCAN? Looks like wine red-cherry burst but it is none of them.

Thank you very much for your help!

(I wrote to Gibson Support but didn't answer yet)

If you don't know the difference between a Studio, Standard or Custom a missing letter is the last thing you need to worry about. Find someone you know who does and forget about paper and consentrate on wood.

Thanks for your input!
I understand your point...and I totally agree!
The fact is that if I have to spend 2k I would like to know exactly what I'm buying, I know the difference between the models and I can distinguish between a good and a bad guitar...but what am I buying?
Might it be a model that was meant to be a custom but for some "defects" was downgrade to a standard? Might it be a fake? I'm even more concerned after the answer I got from Gibson, they said "...The product code you provided does not look familiar...", but if I put the serial number in the Guitar Dater Project website it works and matches with the year 2005.
However, I saw that in many models there is no "S" in the model number. Probably I'm overthinking....

Pics, pics, pics... without them we cannot tell you what it is. CAN is not the color code, the N belongs to the Nickel Hardware code so the color should be CA.

Nice guitar! Looks like a Gibson USA Les Paul Standard. The 5 probably means 50's neck and I guess CA means Cherry Authentic (?).

Hi all,
after I bought the guitar (awesome!!) I finally got an answer from the Gibson Customer Service.
The model number is LP5+... and not LP5T..., my mistake (probably something related to the top quality?).
What is interesting is the color, which is cayenne red! Didn't even know it exists!

Just to let you know...maybe this will be useful for someone else

All the best!
