• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

This was my very first pickup replacement in the late 70's in my Les Paul Custom . I think you should give it a shot , along with your Mesa amp it should be a good pair !

I remember buying a DiMarzio SD in the 70s to put in mu Les Paul copy....the pickup cost more than the guitar (about £70 I think). That guitar was utterly transformed. I bought a pair of 1970s ones on EBay about 10 years ago, for £45 for the pair, and used the coils to make some hybrids with a pair of Burstbuckers (which I hated). A massive mismatch on the coils but I like them....and others have said they sound great..

The one thing that always disappointed me was the masses of silicon sealer under the coils rather than proper spacers.....

Whatever your position on DiMarzios first creation, it proved to be revolutionary. It was the first alternative to Gibson's humbucker of that time, the T Top. A pickup that could not be obtained except by contacting Gibson directly..

The ability to walk out of your local music store with a world class humbucker was a revelation to millions of guitarists, and paved the way for the commercialisation of "aftermarket" pickups we take for granted today.

The DiMarzio Super Distortion is the bedrock humbucker upon which the company was founded. Isn't it amazing that it remains one of the companies best selling pickups to this day ? Respect is the only word I can think of..
